Graduated in Physics at the University of Rome "La Sapienza".
Formerly he was a lecturer of Instrumental Methods of Subnuclear Physics at the Department of Physics of the University "La Sapienza" as well as a research manager at the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN). He has more than 450 scientific publications in international and national journals. He was chairman of the INFN Calculation Commission, Director of the NIC-Rome Project (then Consorzio CASPUR, now confederated in CINECA) and Director of the INFN - CNAF Supercalculating Centre in Bologna. Valente was a protagonist of the original design for the harmonisation of Italian research networks during the second half of the 1980s; he was the first Director of Consortium GARR from 2003 to 2014. As Director, Valente participated in international and continental research networks activities, including those of TERENA, and promoted the achievement and expansion of the GARR mission both nationally and internationally (in the Mediterranean, African and Asian regions).

Since 2013, Valente has been an Italian representative in the e-Infrastructure Reflection Group (e-IRG), which gathers European research network representatives and defines European programmes in the field of e-Infrastructures and support to research. From January 2015 he has been a member of the GARR Technical-Scientific Committee, and he collaborates with GARR research activities under the GÉANT (GN4) project which is co-funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme.

Il Direttore, nominato dal Consiglio di Amministrazione, ha la responsabilità operativa e gestionale del Consortium GARR.

Laureato in Fisica presso l'Università di Bari e Dirigente di Ricerca dell’INFN presso la Sezione di Roma Tre, è Coordinatore del Dipartimento di Calcolo e Storage del GARR dal 2013 e Direttore del GARR dal 1 gennaio 2015.

Ha svolto la sua attività professionale sperimentale principalmente nel campo della Fisica delle particelle. Ha partecipato alla costruzione, messa in opera ed analisi dei dati di diversi esperimenti al CERN ed a Frascati. Nel corso della sua carriera si è concentrato sugli aspetti del calcolo, delle reti di trasmissione dati e dei sistemi di acquisizione e processamento dei dati. Ha ricoperto molti incarichi: Presidente della Commissione Nazionale Calcolo INFN, Chairman del Comitato Europeo per il Calcolo nella Fisica delle Alte Energie (HEPCCC), Direttore del CNAF (Centro Nazionale per la Ricerca e Sviluppo nelle Tecnologie Informatiche e Telematiche dell’INFN), membro del Comitato Tecnico Scientifico della Rete GARR e del Consorzio CASPUR.

In qualità di chairman dello HEPCCC ha avviato il primo Progetto Europeo DataGRID per lo sviluppo di Griglie Computazionali, co-finanziato dalla Commissione Europea ed è stato il Project Manager di successivi progetti Europei di estensione delle infrastrutture Grid nei paesi del Mediterraneo, del Medio Oriente ed in Cina (EUMEDGRID, EUMEDGRID-Support, EUChinaGrid, CHAIN, CHAIN-REDS).

È docente di “Acquisizione Dati e Controllo di Esperimenti” nel corso di laurea magistrale in Fisica presso l’Università di Roma Tre ed esperto scientifico qualificato del MIUR. Ha al suo attivo più di 400 pubblicazioni nel campo delle particelle elementari, dell’acquisizione dati e del Grid computing.

È stato speaker in molte conferenze internazionali sugli argomenti di Grid ed eInfrastructures.
La sua collaborazione con GARR risale agli anni ’90, quando è stato tra l’altro membro del primo Organismo Tecnico Scientifico GARR.

Born in Ancona in 1947, he was President of Consortium GARR from 2003 to 2014.

He graduated in 1972 in Electronic Engineering at the University of Bologna and from the following year he began to work at the Doric University. As a researcher he deepens the problems related to energy with particular studies in the field of renewable energy sources and savings in the civil and industrial sectors.

It also deals with non-CFC refrigeration fluids and thermal control of electronic devices. He also conducted research in the agro-food sector for the transfer of new technologies in the cold chain. Elected president of several consortia, cooperations and companies (CORIT, APRE, SVIM, MIT, CASE, CONICS, ADRIALAB), he was appointed Vice Rector of the University of Ancona in 1991 and reconfirmed in 1995.

In 1997 he was appointed Rector, reconfirmed for five three-year periods until 2012, of the Ancona university, which he wanted to be named "Polytechnic University of Marche" (January 18, 2003). He is the author of numerous publications. He currently holds the full professorship of Industrial Technical Physics at the Faculty of Engineering.

Professor Sauro Longhi was born in Loreto in 1955, where he lives with his wife Antonella and daughter Michela.

He graduated in 1979 in Electronic Engineering at the University of Ancona, where - after having achieved the specialization in Engineering of Automatic Control and Computing Systems at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" - he was a researcher first, and then, in 1992, associate professor in Engineering and Technologies of Control Systems. Since 2001 he has been full professor of Automatics. Since 2011 he has been director of the Department of Information Engineering. Since 2010 he has been president of the Scientific Technical Committee of the Support Center for Language Learning (CSAL) based at the Faculty of Economics.

He was the founder and director of several university spin-offs; he chairs the Graduate Association of the Faculty of Engineering of Ancona; and is a member of the Academic Senate of the Polytechnic University of Marche and of the scientific council of the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship of Univpm.

From 2013 to 2019 professor Longhi has been Rector of the Polytechnic University of Marche and from 2014 to 2022 chairman of GARR, unanimously elected by the Board of Directors. Since 2014 he has also been president of the national cluster "Technologies for Living Environments".

His research activity led to over 320 publications in international journals and international conference proceedings. He is the author of two patents.

He was President of Consortium GARR from 2014 to 2022.
