Maurizio Tira, appointed member of the Board of Directors of the ICSC Foundation
The Italian Ministry of University and Research has appointed Maurizio Tira as a new member of the ICSC Foundation Board of Directors.
The ICSC Foundation aims to establish and manage the National Research Centre in High-Performance Computing, Big Data, and Quantum Computing, which is one of the five National Centres established under the NRRP (National Recovery and Resilience Plan - European Recovery Fund) and is dedicated to strategic sectors for the country's development.
Maurizio Tira, a full professor of Urban Planning and Design at the University of Brescia, where he served as Rector from 2016 to 2022, and President of GARR since 2022, joins a Board of Directors chaired by Antonio Zoccoli, President of INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics), and comprising representatives from the university and research sectors as well as major national companies.
In addition to the Board of Directors, ICSC has a Scientific Committee to coordinate research activities, an Ethical and Data Governance Committee, and a Committee for Access to Supercomputing Resources, which will be crucial in enabling the research program of thematic Spokes with computational capabilities and power.
GARR participates in the activities of the National Centre within Spoke 0, dedicated to the cloud infrastructure of supercomputing. The GARR network is essential for achieving the Centre's objectives, including strengthening and maintaining the Italian distributed HPC (High-Performance Computing) and Big Data infrastructure, as well as developing advanced numerical methods and applications, and software tools to integrate computation, simulation, data collection, and analysis for the research system, productive sector, and society. Thanks to the investments funded under the NRRP (European Recovery Fund), the GARR network will increase its bandwidth capacity beyond terabits per second.
