The latest edition of GARR NEWS is now available. This issue focuses on security across multiple domains: from the role of new European regulations to the protection of data and infrastructures through continuous monitoring and proactive threat detection. It also explores supply chain security and research into AI techniques for detecting fake video content or manipulated images.
Supply chain security has become a crucial topic: the vulnerability of a single supplier can compromise entire infrastructures, as demonstrated by global incidents such as the SolarWinds case and the recent attack on Ivanti. European regulations, including the NIS2 Directive and the Cybersecurity Act, aim to strengthen protection across the entire chain by introducing stricter standards and proactive measures to mitigate risks. In this context, the growing spread of synthetic images and AI-generated manipulated content presents a new challenge, increasing the risk of disinformation and fraud.
Regarding infrastructure, GARR’s Three-Year Plan highlights the need for an independent and sustainable digital ecosystem supporting Italian and European research. This vision includes national and international initiatives, such as developing submarine networks in the Mediterranean and high-performance connections for supercomputing centres. These infrastructures enhance data processing capabilities and enable advanced scientific applications, from fibre-optic sensing to quantum key distribution.
Thanks to technologies such as LoLa, we continue to break down geographical barriers, fostering collaboration between cultural and academic institutions—like the connection between the Tartini Conservatory in Trieste and the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, Serbia.
Another bridge is being built through the Skills4EOSC project, coordinated by GARR. This project establishes a European network of competence centres to develop Open Science and FAIR data management expertise. These centres serve as key hubs for training and sharing best practices, supporting a unified and inclusive vision of Open Science in Europe.
On the topic of digital autonomy and the research community’s ability to drive innovation, Massimo Carboni, GARR’s CTO, highlights the importance of taking an active role in developing new AI technologies—ensuring we harness their potential without ceding decision-making power to the tech giants that dominate the market.
When it comes to technological sovereignty, discussions of the upcoming European Framework Programme (FP10) prompt us to reflect on the vital role of research and innovation in sustaining Europe’s global competitiveness.
All this and much more from Italy’s research and education network.
