Graduated in Physics, formerly Full Professor in Physics at the University of Siena, he was Vice President of INFN from 2000 to 2004 and first Director and then Vice President of the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO).
He was one of the founders and the first President of Consortium GARR from 2002 to 2003, as well as Vice-President from 2003 to 2009.
Since 2010 he has been President of GARR Technical and Scientific Committee.
He is currently the Chairman of the Collaboration Board of the TOTEM experiment at CERN.
The research activity, entirely experimental in the field of Subnuclear High Energy Physics and Astroparticle Physics, is documented by about 400 publications in international journals.
