From fostering digital literacy to advanced technical training to scholarships for young innovators: GARR in-class and distant learning activities are dedicated to the research and education community.
GARR offers courses on topics linked to the management and use of the network, as well as of advanced services and applications delivered on top of it: from network management to cybersecurity, from monitoring to digital identity, from Open Educational Resources (OER) to advanced services. Training activities are designed to support the dissemination of technical knowledge and to exchange information and best practices on research and development of new technologies and services. In addition, GARR promotes initiatives to disseminate and enhance digital skills and digital literacy, to pave the way towards a conscious use of the Internet and the e-Infrastructures. GARR annually awards Scholarships to young graduates that are specialising on themes related to e-Infrastructures.

Antonio Ruberti

Antonio Ruberti, in qualità di Ministro dell'Università e della Ricerca, ha istituzionalizzato nel 1990 il GARR, nato tre anni prima come Gruppo Armonizzazione Reti della Ricerca, per per far fronte in modo compatto ed unitario alle iniziative dei Programmi Quadro della Commissione Europea mettendo insieme le reti informatiche di  CNR, ENEA, INFN e dei consorzi interuniversitari come CILEA, CINECA.
Ruberti mise a disposizione un finanziamento di 5 miliardi di lire con lo scopo di fondere le reti dei vari enti in un'unica rete, la rete GARR, per ottenere un rendimento ed un'efficienza maggiori a costi minori.
La lungimiranza di Antonio Ruberti permette oggi alla Comunità Accademica e di Ricerca italiana di avere a disposizione un'infrastruttura di alta qualità e ad alte prestazioni, al pari con gli altri paesi nel resto d'Europa.

At the moment there are no active calls

If you are 30 or younger you can submit your research project on one of the subjects indicated by GARR and be awarded with a 12-month scholarship for a total value of 19.000€. During this time, you will be hosted in one of GARR offices, in either Rome, Milan or Bari. Applications will be evaluated in a first-come-first-served basis, until the funds made available by GARR are exhausted.

Mandatory requirements:

  • date of birth, as indicated in the call;
  • to hold an undergraduate or graduate degree by an Italian University or equivalent;
  • good level of Italian and English, written and spoken.

To participate you will need to fill in the form and attaching the research project and the language certificates as requested.

Applications will be evaluated within 60 business days of receipt.

The evaluation will be based on:

  • degrees and qualifications of the candidate;
  • interview with the selection board;
  • focus of the research project on one of the subjects indicated by GARR;
  • quality of the research project. For evaluation purposes, the originality, innovation and short-term applicability of the proposed projects will be considered rewarding elements.

The best projects will have the possibility to participate in the Future Talent Programme of TNC, the European conference that every year brings together decision makers, networking and collaboration specialists, and identity and access management experts from all major European networking and research organisations, universities, worldwide sister institutions, as well as industry representatives.

Research projects

GARR scholarships, each worth €19,000, are aimed to finance a research project of the duration of 12 months, extendable. The eligible research projects are focused on the application of technologies for the development of innovative digital infrastructures and services in any disciplinary context.

Such projects can be carried out at any institution, academic or cultural organisation connected to the GARR network or at a GARR site.

Application Deadline: 15th December 2023.


Required Information


Additionally, candidates must independently identify:

  • The study and research project they intend to carry out;
  • The institution where they will be hosted to carry out the project;
  • The internal tutor within the institution who will supervise their work.

Requirements

To participate in the selection, candidates must meet the following mandatory requirements:

  • Age: 30 years or younger;
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, obtained from Italian or European Union universities or institutions of higher education;
  • Good knowledge of Italian and English languages.

The project


The research project should focus on the application of technologies for the development of innovative digital infrastructures and services in multidisciplinary contexts and should contain all the information indicated in the call for applications.

During the 12-month project, there will be some days dedicated to gathering all GARR scholars and presenting, sharing and discussing the work done.

Being awarded an “Orio Carlini” scholarship also offers training opportunities and participation in GARR community events, such as workshops and the annual conference, where the research project results can be presented.

Moreover, the best projects will have the opportunity to compete in the Future Talent Programme of the European GÉANT, network and to be presented at TNC, the most prestigious European conference on research networking.

Le borse di studio, del valore di 19.000€ l'una, sono volte alla realizzazione di un progetto di ricerca della durata di 12 mesi, prorogabili, sull’applicazione di tecnologie innovative per lo sviluppo di infrastrutture e servizi digitali in contesti multidisciplinari. I progetti possono essere svolti presso enti ed istituzioni scientifiche, culturali ed accademiche collegate alla rete GARR oppure presso il Consortium GARR stesso.

Per partecipare alle selezioni gli interessati dovranno soddisfare i seguenti requisiti obbligatori:

  • età come indicata nel bando;
  • titolo di studio riconosciuto o reso equipollente da Università o Istituto di istruzione universitaria italiano o dal Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca (Titolo di laurea triennale, magistrale, laurea specialistica o laurea a ciclo unico);
  • buona conoscenza della lingua inglese.

Inoltre gli interessati dovranno individuare autonomamente:

  • il progetto di studio e ricerca che intendono realizzare;
  • la struttura presso la quale saranno ospitati per la realizzazione del progetto;
  • un tutor interno alla struttura che seguirà il loro lavoro.

Il progetto di studio dovrà essere incentrato sull’applicazione di tecnologie innovative per lo sviluppo di infrastrutture e servizi digitali in contesti multidisciplinari e contenere tutte le informazioni indicate nel bando.

Elenco degli Enti collegati alla rete GARR presso cui è possibile svolgere la borsa.

I contatti con la struttura devono essere presi prima di presentare la domanda, in quanto è necessaria una loro lettera che attesti la disponibilità ad ospitare il borsista.

Durante il percorso formativo sono previste delle giornate di incontro e confronto tra borsisti per condividere il lavoro svolto.

Orio Carlini

Orio Carlini Professor Orio Carlini was one of the founders of the GARR network.
In 1986, as national coordinator of EUREKA projects for the then Ministry of the University of Scientific and Technological Research (MURST), Professor Carlini promoted the establishment of the Research Networks Harmonization Group (GARR), consisting of representatives of the main public research bodies (CNR, ENEA and INFN) and of the main inter-university consortia (CILEA, CINECA, CSATA).
