Stefano Giordano named President of Internet Society Italy
The General Assembly of Internet Society Italy, which convened in Rome at the GARR headquarters on December 6, has renewed its Board and appointed Stefano Giordano as the new President.
Stefano Giordano, engineer and full professor at the Department of Information Engineering at the University of Pisa, succeeds Alessandro Berni, who will continue to serve the association as Honorary President.
Claudia Battista, Director of GARR, extended her congratulations to the new President, remarking: "GARR has always supported the activities of ISOC Italy and will continue to do so, recognising the fundamental value of its commitment to promoting an inclusive and accessible digital culture. We wish Stefano Giordano success in his role, confident that he will lead the Board with expertise, vision, and the spirit that define the association."
"I am honoured to have been entrusted with this important role," said Stefano Giordano. "I have been familiar with the Internet Society since its foundation in 1992, and the first observation to make is that things are truly changing, and at a much faster pace than what we’ve seen over the past thirty years. It is clear to everyone that we are witnessing a technological transformation that we must learn to master, keeping humanity at the center through an approach known as human-centric. I am referring to transformative scenarios such as those envisioned in Society 5.0, where ethical and moral considerations are prioritized to ensure advanced technologies serve people. I intend to focus my mandate particularly on supporting young people, as I believe they will bring a multidisciplinary approach to addressing problems from diverse perspectives, fostering open dialogue among experts from various fields."
Key themes at the core of the association's activities include those related to the 2030 Strategy, recently adopted by the Internet Society. This five-year vision outlines two strategic objectives:
- Ensuring that all people have access to reliable, resilient, and affordable Internet.
- Ensuring that all people can use the Internet securely and safely.
Born in 1963, Stefano Giordano is an engineer and lecturer in "Networking" and "Teletraffic Models and Measurements" at the University of Pisa. A pioneer of the Internet, he participated in the CNUCE CNR projects that introduced the Internet to the world, promoting network culture and digital inclusion. He also collaborated with GARR in the creation and development of telecommunications networks.
